Patient’s Story
You are Rishi Punak, a 26-year-old man attending the consultation because you’ve been feeling unwell for the past two weeks. It began shortly after you returned from a trip to Kerala, India, where you developed flu-like symptoms including fever, general tiredness, and a general feeling of being run down.
The fever and flu-like symptoms have now resolved, but you have noticed dark-coloured urine, pale, loose stools, itching, and you still feel very tired.
Only provide the following information if asked:
Your mum noticed your eyes looked yellow, which prompted her to encourage you to see the GP.
You did eat street food while in India.
Social history: You are not sexually active, have no tattoos, and are not on any medications. You do not smoke or drink alcohol. You work as a chef in an Indian restaurant and live at home with your mum and dad.
If asked about any other symptoms, politely say “No.”
Ideas: You are wondering if it could be malaria, but you did take antimalarial tablets before your trip and don’t recall any mosquito bites.
Concerns: You want to know whether you’re well enough to return to work, especially as you work as a chef
Expectations: You’re hoping the doctor can explain what is going on with your health.
Key Questions for the Doctor:
- “Can I go back to work?”
- “When can I return to work?”
If the doctor mentions hepatitis A, ask:
“Do I still need to take the hepatitis A vaccine if I travel again in the future?”
