Patient’s Story
You are Alisha, a 16-year-old student currently studying science at college.
Opening Statement (to begin the consultation): “Doctor, I would like to get an abortion.”
If asked to explain further: You found out you were pregnant 3 days ago using a home urine pregnancy test. You repeated this test today and it is still positive. You do not wish to continue with the pregnancy as you’re concerned that having a baby would disrupt your education and you’re also afraid your parents would be disappointed, particularly because of your family’s religious background.
GIVE THE BELOW INFORMATION IF ASKED
This is your first pregnancy, and you’ve never been pregnant before. Your last menstrual period was 7 weeks ago. You have never been on any contraceptive.
Social background:
- You are in a safe relationship with your boyfriend, who is 17 and a fellow student in your class.
- You live at home with your parents and three siblings.
- You are not able to tell your parents about this situation.
- If asked whether there’s anyone you can confide in, you say your 25-year-old sister, who you trust.
Ideas: You’ve had time to think about it, and you feel quite certain that you do not want to continue with the pregnancy. You believe that this is not the right time in your life to have a child.
Concerns: You’re very worried that continuing the pregnancy will seriously affect your education and future plans. You’re also afraid that your parents will be deeply disappointed if they find out, especially because of your family’s strong religious beliefs. You don’t feel able to involve them at this stage.
Expectations: You would like the doctor to explain what your options are, including how to access an abortion safely and confidentially. You want to understand the next steps and what kind of support is available.
Say NO to any other questions asked outside of the details already provided in the scenario. Accept anything offered to you by the doctor.
