Patient’s Story
You are calling because of an episode of blood in your urine noticed five days ago, though you haven’t seen it visibly since yesterday. You’re calling because the out-of-hours doctor said to see your GP for follow-up.
You felt and still feel fine otherwise — no pain when passing urine, no fever, no abdominal or back pain. You don’t feel unwell. You’ve not had any weight loss or appetite changes. Your bowels are fine too.
You are a bit shaken up as seeing blood in the urine was scary. You’ve never had this before.
You’re not on any regular medication except occasional co-codamol for joint pains.
Social History: You don’t smoke or drink. You are retired Train driver. You live with your wife of 30 years and do not have any other sexual partner.
Ideas: You are unsure what might have caused the blood in your urine. You wonder if it could be due to an infection or something more serious.
Concerns: The episode was frightening for you, and you hope it’s nothing serious like cancer.
Expectations: You would like the doctor to explain what might be causing your symptoms and to advise whether it is safe for you to travel to Greece tomorrow for your 30-year wedding anniversary with your wife. You will be away for 3 weeks
