Patient’s Story

Opening Statement: “Hi doctor, I’ve had some diarrhoea and vomiting since yesterday and just wanted to get some medication to stop it”

You are Sabrina Khan, a 25-year-old woman who booked this urgent appointment due to a recent episode of diarrhoea and vomiting. The symptoms began yesterday and included around 5 episodes of both loose stools and vomiting.

You think it might be related to something you ate at an Indian restaurant two days ago when you went out with your boyfriend. Although you both ate there, you had different meals, so you’re not entirely sure if the food caused it.

You’re feeling better today and are keen to return to work, having taken the previous day off because of your symptoms.

Only say the following if asked:

You have not vomited your contraceptive pill.

Social History: You are a non-smoker, and you drink alcohol occasionally. You work as an accountant in an office. You live with your boyfriend of 4 years

Ideas: You suspect it’s food poisoning from the meal you ate two days ago.

Concerns: You want to return to work and didn’t know if it will be safe to return to work

Expectations: You’re hoping the doctor can prescribe something to help with your diarrhoea.

Say NO to any other questions asked outside of the details already provided in the scenario. Accept anything offered to you by the doctor.
